Wednesday forecast for Austin: A day after we hit 91 degrees, setting a new daily heat record for March 15, it’s noticeably cooler Wednesday morning, thanks to a cold front that sneaked in late Tuesday. Variable winds have swept away the humidity for now and, as of 5:30 a.m., are keeping temperatures to a mild 61 degrees.

The rest of Wednesday should be mostly sunny with a high temperature near 82, just four degrees shy of the record high of 86 set just a few years ago in 2013, according to the National Weather Service. At night, expect increased cloudiness as the low temperature slips to around 64.

Rain chances enter the forecast this week for the first time on Thursday, with thunderstorms possible after 1 p.m., the weather service says. Temperatures, though, should become cooler, with a high only reaching near 76. Forecasters call for a 40 percent chance of rain on Thursday night as the evening low is expected to drop to around 63.

Friday’s outlook appears similar to Thursday’s with persisting rain chances of 40 percent and a high temperature near 76. Showers and thunderstorms become more likely Friday night as rain chances ramp up to 60 percent. Temperatures also become much cooler, with a nighttime low plunging to around 54, the weather service says.

The weekend will see rain chances easing on Saturday and sunshine returning to full strength on Sunday. But below-normal temperatures are expected, with peak temperatures only in the low 60s on Saturday and in the mid-60s on Sunday. The new chill in the air gets more intense at night, as nighttime temperatures during the weekend could drop to wintry levels in the mid- to lower 40s.
