Friday forecast for Austin: President Barack Obama will visit Austin on Friday, the first day of the South by Southwest Interactive Conference and Festival and just when the chance for rain today is at its highest.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler has already warned downtown workers to just phone it in, as it were, to avoid the likely traffic jams this afternoon caused by the presidential motorcade. Several Austin schools also are holding a half-day Friday so buses can avoid the tie-ups. Did we mention it’s likely going to be raining at the same time?

According to the National Weather Service, the storm system that’s been generating a light but steady source of rain in the past few days will continue to soak Austin on Friday. Showers are likely during the day with a thunderstorm possible after noon, the weather service says. At night, rain chances persist, even as President Obama departs Austin around 8 p.m.

The storm system will move off to the northeast Friday night, according to the weather service, followed by clearing skies and mild weather this weekend.

Saturday’s outlook calls for heavy clouds at the start with a high temperature near 75. But the skies clear up by the evening as the low temperature drops to around 57, forecasters say.

Sunday turns gorgeous for our SXSW visitors, of course: Sunny skies, high near 84, but with brisk west winds of 10 to 15 mph and gusts as high as 20 mph.

Austin appears to bypass spring altogether next week as Monday’s forecast calls for sunny skies and a high temperature near 88. Tuesday could see more of the same with sunshine and a high near 87.
