Bring sunglasses, hang on to hats during windy, sunny Super Tuesday

Tuesday forecast for Austin: It’s Super Tuesday — let’s hope the weather lives up to that nickname. According to the National Weather Service, morning clouds will give way to sunshine later in the day as a modest cold front rolls through Central Texas.

As of 5 a.m., Austin had already hit 67 degrees, which is only one degree shy of the normal high temperature for March 1. The cold front arriving in Austin around midday won’t drop temperatures as much as it will sweep out the clouds and increased humidity we’ve seen recently. In fact, the weather service expects Austin to reach a high temperature near 78.

So if you are on your way to the polls this morning, don’t let the mostly cloudy skies discourage you. Bring your sunglasses because sunshine will emerge by midday. But the biggest sign the front has arrived will be the shift in southerly breezes as they become north winds with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Without the humidity brought in from the Gulf, Tuesday night will be chillier than what we’ve seen lately as the nighttime low drops to around 47 and wind gusts continue, the weather service says.

Wednesday kicks off a string of sunny days that lasts well into the weekend. Temperatures will climb into the mid-70s before becoming increasingly cloudy at night as south winds return. The southerly breezes also will keep the evening low balmy around 61, forecasters say.

Thursday could be the warmest day of the week as temperatures are expected to peak in the low 80s. But another frontal system will shift winds again to the north and decrease humidity to keep the nighttime low around a cool 50 degrees.

By Friday, the sunshine continues with a high near 76, the weather service says. The winds shift yet again from the north-northeast at 5 to 10 mph to become southeast in the afternoon, the weather service says.
